A political earthquake in Calasparra follows the announcement that our Mayor, Pepe Velez, will be the new Government Delegate in Murcia, a post incompatible with his current role as mayor.
Joe Velez was the nominated successor to Jesus Navarro and took over the position in July 2015..
Our Mayor was an avid and outspoken supporter of the current President of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, when he stood for election, as Leader of the PSOE Socialist party against the official candidate, Susana Diaz. This loyalty has now been amply rewarded.
However, Calasparra will lose a much loved and appreciated public figure who has gained the respect of the local population and won a landslide victory in the last local elections virtually wiping out any opposition.
Who will take over? Most of the new councilors are young and energetic and the obvious favourite is Antonio Merino, Deputy Mayor, However, the elected members of the PSOE will have the last word.
We will keep you informed. In the meantime our sincerest congratulations go to Jose Velez who will undoubtedly keep the interests of Calasparra ever present in his new role.
