The gypsies of Calasparra marked the International Day of the Gypsy yesterday with workshops and a manifesto with hopes for recognition and equality in the future.
It was an occasion to celebrate, to demonstrate the customs and roots of a persecuted international community and also for commemorating the gypsies who were victims of the nazis.
Gypsies still face many inequalities in employment, education and medical care and health and continue to strive to break the stereotypes and prejudices.
The event was presented by Teresa Salinas, Head of the local Department of Equality with the representative of the Secetariat Gypsy Foundation.
Two young gypsies read the manifesto.
“Sastipen thaj Mestipen” (Health and Freedom).
