CAVE DRAWINGS DECLARED SAFE AS FIRE DAMAGE IS ASSESSED

The Emergency Unit of Cultural Patrimony and technical experts from Murcia University have inspected the prehistoric drawings of the shallow caves in the Almadenes Canyon and report there is no fire damage.
The cave drawings have been listed by UNESCO as part of the world heritage since 1998.
The fire almost reached the entrance of the Monkey Cave of the Serreta and the Visitors´ Centre and has affected the surrounding area which is subject to a BIC preservation order.
Also affected is one of the paleolitic caves, Los Losares, where pines and bushes have burned. Experts estímate that temperatures outside the cave, El Arco, reached more than 600 degrees centigrade, which may have affected the outside walls and made them unstable.
