Representatives of the 120 former workers at the Conservas Fernandez Canning Plant, known as La Diosa, in Calasparra, held emergency talks about the future of the factory with the Mayor, Jesus Navarro, yesterday morning (Tuesday).
A representative of the Works Committee said they had received assurances from the Mayor of Calasparra that “he was in contact with several businesses which were interested in purchasing or leasing the factory and opening for business.”
On Radio Calasparra the Mayor said there had been a judicial process after the owners of the factory called a voluntary meeting of creditors. Now that process had ended an Administrator would be appointed and it would be his function to find a buyer as soon as possible.
The end of this judicial process also means goods and machinery at the factory can be embargoed and the proceeds may be used to compensate workers who have still not received their redundancy payments.
“Everyone wants the plant to reopen as soon as possible and create work for between 100 and 150 local workers,” said the Mayor, “This is the solution we are working towards and there are several companies interested in the plant.”
