The spokesperson for the new local Taurean Commission, José Veléz, has announced a loss of 30,000€ incurred by the bull runs and bull fights held in Calasparra during the fiestas of the Patron Saints and the September fiestas.
The deficit includes a loss of 9,300€ for bull fights during the fiestas of the local patron saints earlier this year.
Defending the events José Veléz said: “We must take into account the significant profits made in the municipal area which were awesome.”
Both the President of the Commission, the Mayor, Jesus Navarro, and José Veléz, said they blamed the current economic situation for the lack of spectators, as only 652 season tickets were sold. The proceeds from ticket sales were similar to last year despite a price rise, they added.
The Mayor urged the Commission to continue to search for ways to attract more spectators and underlined the importance of the bull fights for the town.
He said the bull run alone attracted hundreds of people evey year who spent money in the local area. The fiestas generated wealth for the recuperation of the local area and benefitted bars, restaurants and other businesses.
In the interests of transparency the full details of the fiestas’ finances are available on the municipal webpage: calasparra.org.
