Two young men from Calasparra died and three were seriously injured following a brutal frontal collision involving a Mercedes saloon and a van on the road between the Venta de Olivas and Calasparra at 6.45 this morning.
The five young men, aged between 20 and 35 years old, were travelling from Calasparra to work on a construction site in Albacete when their van was involved in a frontal collision with a Mercedes, driven by a business person from Fortuna, and travelling in the opposite direction.
Two passengers in the Mercedes also died and another is one of the three seriously injured. This is the worst road accident in the region for five years.
The Mayor of Calasparra has been in touch with the emergency services since the early hours of this morning and has called a special meeting at the Town Hall this morning “to demonstrate our solidarity with the five families facing this dreadful tragedy.”
The two vehicles were virtually destroyed in the collision. Six ambulances, the fire brigade, the Guardia Civil and the local police attended the scene.
A police spokesman said the saloon car crossed into the opposite carriageway and collided full on with the van travelling in the other direction. He said the accident “was probably the result of a distraction or an excess to velocity as there were no signs of braking on the road surface”. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
