Landowners, small holders and farmers in Calasparra have voted against the introduction of a new drop irrigation system for local agricultural land.
Some 1470 voters queued in the Municipal Auditorium last night to cast their vote for or against the new system which would have replaced the antiquated system of water canals.
The Mayor of Calasparra told Radio Calasparra it was a “sad day for the town and for local agriculture.”
He said the new system was the “only future” for agriculture in Calasparra and would have created employment throughout the year for local residents.
“But the vote was transparent and democratic and we must respect it,” he added.
Voting continued until the early hours of Thursday morning and the result means the project is paralysed.
