POSSIBLE YEAR LONG DELAY BEFORE OPENING CORVERA

The war of words between the regional government and the concessionary authority, Aeromur, over the opening of the new Corvera airport has taken a new twist as the regional press reports that Valcarcel is about to start proceedings for breach of contract.
After a week of recriminations and accusations in the press, with the regional government blaming delays on Aeromur and viceversa, it is being reported that the President of the regional government, Valcarcel, is at the point of issuing a writ against the concessionary authority for breach of contract which could see the opening of the airport delayed for another year.
The legal proceedings are based on the failure to open the airport within the established timetable, that is July last year. Once begun the proces is reversible and Aeromur has four months to appeal. But it the contract is rescinded a new tendering process will have to take place to find another managment company for Corvera.
The orginal contract was awarded to a consortium of companies in 2007: Sacyr, BMN, Infucapital, SabadellCAM, Inprisma, Cementos Lacruz and Montoro e Hijos. However, the last four companies have since dropped out. The remaining members of consortium had applied for another 18 months to finish the work which runs out in September this year.
Relations between Aeromur and the regional government have seriously deteriorated over the last few months with accusations and counter accustions in the regional press. However, Aeromur has consistently claimed that AENA´s refusal to close the airprot at San Javier is the reason for the delay in opening Corvera.
