The Association of Farmers and Smallholders who use irrigation water from the Argos Reservoir must vote again to decide whether the modernisation of the irrigation systems in Calasparra will go ahead.
At a meeting last Wednesday technicians and engineers attempted to dispel the doubts of some members who are opposed to the introduction of the new drop irrigation system which will subsitute the current system of irrigation channels which dates back to the Arab occupation.
The members at the meeting were advised they would be “missing a great opportunity” to improve farming and create employment if they voted against the modernisation.
The General Assembly of the Association has already voted three times in favor of the modernisation however a minority group has continued to protest. Now an Extraordinary Meeting of the Associaiton will be called to take part in a final vote which will agree or reject the modernisation plans.
A date for the meeting has yet to be set.
