Two motions by the United Left Party aimed at enabling crisis hit Calasparrians to grow their own food and give a boost to local agriculture were unanimously approved at December´s meeting of the Town Hall Council.
Ricardo Garcia, Coordinator of the United Left, proposed the creation of a “Banco de tierras” (a land bank) to include all municipal land and possibly privately owned land which would be put at the disposal of “those most in need” in the municipal area so they can grow their own food.
The priority should be those residents who were worse affected by the crisis but once land had been allocated to this priority group other residents could benefit from the scheme, he said.
“More ambitiously, in the future, different projects could provide self employment,” he added.
The second motion, also passed unanimously, was to apply to the regional government for a
“disadvantaged status” for local agriculture. Once this status was approved more help and assistance would be available to local agriculture but particularly for investment in young farmers.
