Seven social workers employed by the troubled North West Social Services Department were made redundant in October after working for three months without pay.
As part of the austerity measures the regional government withdrew funding from the department, which provides social workers for the four municipal areas including Calasparra in North West Murcia, and the social service programmes have disappeared.
The four local authorities have made a massive economic effort in the last month to raise 250,000 euros towards the workers’ wages for October, according to the Mayor of Calasparra, Jesus Navarro.
He added that the matter must be resolved by the end of December or the North East Social Service Department would be not be economically viable and must dissolve.
