The sudden and dramatic fall in temperatures in Calasparra this week makes a lie of the predictions we will have a short mild winter this year. Or maybe it’s just a glitch!!
Oscillations in temperature from boiling one minute to freezing the next has predictably produced an epidemic of colds and flu as our body’s thermostats struggle to adjust. Residents are stocking up on firewood and cooking up steaming stews and warming soups to stave off the cold.
This week the Ecological Vegetable Stall, on the corner outside the Sangui supermarket, offers the best and cheapest vegetables on the market. All the produce is grown without any type of chemical or artificial fertilizers or pest control and is freshly picked for the weekly market.
The stallholder, Salvador, has also been working hard on his English lessons and will welcome the opportunity to try out some of his grammar on his English speaking customers.
This week he offers red, hot chilies, delicious slices of bright orange pumpkin, spinach, lettuces, Swiss Chard, celery, beetroot, carrots and aubergines.
Customers are advised to shop early to avoid disappointment. He was completely sold out by midday last week.
