This week the Municipal Walking Programme offers a journey through the Roman history of Calasparra with a visit to the Baños of Gilico taking in the hamlets of Los Panes and the Casa Colorás.
The 15k walk is next weekend, October 28, and has been rated as “easy.”
Gilico was inhabited by ancient civilizations and over the years archeological digs have discovered materials which show the existence of different habitats and villas.
The Baños of Gilico, within the municipal area of Calasparra, also known as the Baños of San José, are one of the corresponding archeological sites. Legend has it that a sick pig was cured at the natural spring on the site, which may have been known to the Romans. Even though today all that remains of the Baths is a livestock farm, the spring was a staging post for many stockbreeders and travelers over the years. The Baths were abandoned in the middle of the 20th century.
The walk begins at the site of the ancient baths and crosses the beautiful landscapes of the Minas de Gilico (mines) taking in the hamlets of Casa Colorás, Las Pértigas, Loma de la Vereda, Cabeza Silvestre and the Cabeza de la Cruz, and returning to Calasparra by the “Piñera” road.
The walk leaves from the Joyman cafeteria at 9am on Sunday:
Inscription at the Tourist Office costs 3 euros.
