The Department of Health has delayed the flu vaccination programme this year at the local Health This year the vaccinations will begin on October 22 instead of October 1.
The object is to improve the coverage of the vaccination programme which last year was well below the national average. In Calasparra some 53% of residents over 65 years old took part in the programme compared to an average of 57.7% nationally.
The Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality points out that the programme is aimed at vulnerable groups such as the chronically ill, pregnant women, pensioners and medical staff.
Moreover, the Ministry reminds patients that flu is a respiratory condition caused by a virus and, for this reason, does not respond to treatment by antibiotics. The Health Authorities recommend hygienic measures, including covering your nose when you sneeze, to prevent the spread of the virus.
