The VI Carrera Benéfica «Entre Arrozales» (Charity Race Around the Rice Fields), coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Denomination of Origin Protection (DOP) of Calasparra rice and will raise funds for cancer research.
Yesterday the race was officially presented at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Hope by Cllrs Juan Bernal and Pablo Cassinello; the President of DOP Arroz de Calasparra, Jose Martinez; the President of the Sanctuary Commission, Juana Dolores Garcia; and representatives of the charities that raise funds for cancer research, Calaparra Se Mueve and Mucho a Mucho.
The race gives participants an opportunity to enjoy one of the emblematic sporting dates on the calendar, combining sport, tourism, natural surroundings, gastronomy and solidarity in the singular setting of the rice fields.
This 10 kilometre race along footpaths in the rice fields, starts and finishes at the local Sanctuary. There is also a walking route.
At the end of the trials the trophies will be presented and all participants will be invited to share a dish of Calasparra rice, cheese from Tio Resti, ham from el Pozo and Estrella de Levante beer.
The race is on September 20.
