Changes in the weather systems with shorter, milder winters have increased the risk of forest fires in the Murcia region, and the authorities have introduced preventive measures in «areas of of high environmental value» such as Calasparra.
According to the regional government of Murcia the milder weather during the winter favours the propogation of fires as many pine trees are dry or dying rendering them combustible material.
The regional plan includes eliminating affected trees, managing combustible materials, improving the habitat, ecological restoration and the restoration of forest paths.
Some 26 machines and 513 workers, including forestry brigades, specialist companies and technical personel will cover 11.459 hectares, of which some 24%, 2,801 hectares has already been cleared.
The municipal areas included in the plan are Calasparra, Cehegin, Moratalla, Bullas, Lorca, Alhama de Murcia and Cieza.

Interestingly, the region has also announced grants for shepherds who will graze sheep in forestry areas to control vegetation as a measure to prevent forest fires.
