Christmas is a fairly low key affair in Calasparra but the Municipal Belen (Model Nativity) is so much more than a few religious figures and a cradle.
The tradition of model nativities has a huge following in the Murcia region with fans collecting pieces over the entire year. The results are amazing as the traditional religious scene is intertwined with the cultural, agricultural, artesanal and an enormous ecetera to create a historic representation of our local and regional heritage.

The «Belén Municipal», crafted by local artesan, Ángel Sánchez “El Caete”, consists of 1,500 pieces that reflect the Belenist tradition of Murcia, inherited from the «Salzillesca» (an artistic syle of the Spanish sculptor, Francisco Salzillo ,1707-1783).
