Reciclados Tara S.L, Agro-Food recycling plant, has withdrawn its application to extend their site, near to the Puerta Cave, and plans to open a Biogas plant following protests from local residents and Calasparra Town Hall.
The Mayoress of Calasparra, Teresa Garcia, made the announcement yesterday following weeks of fierce opposition from the Town Hall and residents.
Reciclados Tara S.L. had presented an application to obtain a «declaration of public interest,» an essential requirement for the extension of the site and for a biogas plant in the area. An application, according to the Town Hall and residents, that presented a «a grave risk of damage to the natural surroundings.»
The Mayoress said: «From the first moment the Town Hall demonstrated their position: “we do not consider that this project complies with the necessary conditions to be declared that it is in the interests of the public of Calasparra. We have expressed this publicly and yesterday, at a meeting with owners of the recycling plantc, we maintained this firm defence of our town by putting the interests of the public first».
At this meeting the local government of Calasparra demonstrated that their decision was non-negotiable: «as the defence of our natural patrimony such as the Puerto Cave, one of the major geological treasures of our country and a jewel of tourism; the protection of our agriculture and the rice fields that present an economic motor of the first order; and the protection of the Sinclinal of Calasparra, an underground water reserve that represents fundamental resources for the present and future of our town and our region.
«The Town Hall has always acted, and will continue to act, for the protection of our environment and the well being of our residents in Calasparra, and we must always have the guarantee that any project that comes to our town must be evaluated with rigour, integrity and, of course, considering the present and future of our town.»
After listening to the Mayoress and her government team the company, Reiclados Tara S.L. rescinded their application and renounced the construction of a biogas plant.
Calasparra Town Hall informed the company that not going ahead with the application was the best decision and confirmed that the activities of the company would be carefully monitored in the future.
