Four unwelcome guests for breakfast in central Mortatalla on Sunday as four young bulls broke away from the traditional route giving local residents the fright of their lives.
Fortunately, no-one was seriously hurt when four of the five bulls, being herded from the Casa Cristo towards the town by residents on foot and on horseback, crashed into the town centre.
However, one young man, who took refuge on a wall, fell and sustained various bruises to his arms and legs and another elderly resident, standing just two hundred metres from the Town Hall was tossed and trodden on by one of the bulls but managed to leave the scene without assistance.
The animals were being herded along in the traditional “vereda” when four broke away along the San Juan road, Calasparra, entering the town on a non schedules route and sowing havoc amongst local residents and visitors who were enjoying chocolate and churros in the square.
By some miracle most people escaped without injury and the bulls calmly made their way to the corral.
The third bull run of the fiestas went ahead without further incident.
Tonight there is a grand firework display and a night of traditional Spanish “coplas.”
