SECOND DIG IN CALASPARRA UNCOVERS HUMAN REMAINS

Calasparra is exhuming it’s past as the second phase of the archeological dig on the Cerro de la Virgin confirms the discovery of an early Christian church and uncovers a tomb with human remains.
During this second excavation the unearthing of the early Christian church has been completed and confirmed that it dates back to the V century, explains the Director of the dig, David Martínez Chico.
The archeologist, Rubén Fernández , underlined that one of the new discoveries during this second dig was a tomb in the basilica that suggestd those buried there «were of importance to the society».
He explained that the tomb was made up of stones, sealed with mortar, to form a coffin and painted.
Referring to the human remains he stated they were laid in an «anatomical position» and consisted of a young person and a fetus.
The Head of the local Department of Culture and Patrimony, Antonio José Merino, has highlighted the discoveries made during this second ecavation:
«They underline the value of our patrimony», he said. «They are carrying out great investigations and continue to discover our roots and how they have formed our present.»
