Three residents of Calasparra have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Murcia for allegedly causing the oil spill from the pipeline Cartagena–Puertollano that flooded agricultural land on Los Pertigas, Calasparra.
Two local men and a woman are facing charges for the damage the pipeline and causing a spill of crude oil.
The three detainedd allegedly used an excavaror to make an illegal perforation in the pipline with the intention of stealing oil. However, by accident they damaged the pipeline that transports unrefined oil. Subsequently, they attempted to hide the hole covering it with soil thus agravating the spill.
After being alerted by a resident on May 22 agents from the Guardia Civil confirmed that a spill of crude oil had affected approximately 8,000 square metres, including 5,000 square metres of public «monte» and 3,000 square metres of a private almond orchard.
Repsol activated their emergency protocol and collaborated with the Guardia Civil to paralize the oil flow, clean, repair and offer technical advice.
The damage, including the clean up and the interruption of the oil pipeline to the refinery, at more than four million euros.
The detainees have appeared before magistrates and face possible prison sentences and fines.
