The data of more than 600,000 Iberdrola customers has been stolen by scammers in a massive cyberattack including names, addresses, DNI or passport information, numbers of accounts with Iberdrola etc and they are already being used in scams.
The OCU (Organisation of Consumers and Users) reports that this latest theft was discovered yesterday, Wednesday.
But beware, the scammers have already started using the data to convince customers they are, in fact, phoning from Iberdrola, in an effort to secure your bank details.
The scam goes like this: the scammer will phone and attempt to win your confidence by asking a «security question» the answer to which is contained in the data they have stolen. They will go on to confirm your account number with Iberdrola, name, address, postal address if different and your DNI in an effort to convince you they are genuine. All of this data has been stolen by the scammers.
The scammer will purport to be phoning customers from Iberdrola to «ensure customers are getting the best deal from the intermediary company that bills customers».
THERE IS NO INTERMEDIARY COMPANY!! Customers contract directly from Iberdrola. THESE SCAMMERS ARE JUST TRYING TO GET YOU TO GIVE THEM YOUR BANK DETAILS WHICH WERE NOT PART OF THE STOLEN DATA.
IT´S A MASSIVE SCAM AND THEY COULD CLEAR YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.
No reputable company would phone and ask you for your bank details.
No reputable company would ask you for your bank details by email or SMS.
If the scammers phone you and claim to be from Ibredrola hang up immediately.
If the scammers contact you by email or SMS do not open the email and do not reply.
If the scammers contact you block the telephone number and report it is a scam.
If the scammers contact you by email or SMS eliminate the message and report it as a scam.
If by chance you took the bait of the scammers, according to the OCU, «no payment made by a user under the effects of fraud may be considered «authorized» and should be refunded by the bank in question and, according to the European Banking Authority, this includes those cases where the person making tthe payment has been «manipulated to approve the payment».
DON´T EVER GIVE YOUR BANK DETAILS TO ANYONE WHO COLD CALLS YOU!
Editors Note
These scammers are extremely convincing and will give you all your personalo details in order to convince you they are genuinely from Iberdrola. Nexonr staff were contacted by the scammers yesterday so we know they are already active and using the stolen data.
