GOVERNMENT ISSUES HEALTH HEAT WARNING

The Department of Health recommends «extreme precaution and responsibility» to avoid the harmful effects of the heat in our part of the Murcia region as temperatures soar.
The Department recommends special care for the most vulnerable: children, the elderly and those with health problems.
The predictions are for 50 days of extreme heat this summer in the North West region of  Murcia, which includes Calasparra, with temperatures as high as 46C.
The coolest times of the day in our part of the world are before 11am and after 8pm. However, if you are practising sport, carrying out heavy work outside or walking your dog, the best option is to rise early to take advantage of the cool of the morning or go out in the very late evening.
To stay safe it is recommended that you pass as much time as possible in cool places, eat light meals with lots of fruit and vegetables and drink lots of water.
Drinking an excess of alcohol or drinks with caffiene and high sugar content can produce loss of body fluids and are not recommended.
Always wear a hat, sunglasses, light clothing and comfortable footwear  and use sunscreen.
If you are planning a trip make sure you have plenty of water, use the air conditioning in your car and carry a form of shade in case of breakdown or accident.
If you go for a walk in the cool of the morning give yourself time to return home before the heat of the day. Always carry water.
Try to frontload or backload your day. Take a nap in the afternoon. You are in Spain: Have a siesta!!!
Signs of heat stroke are a fever of 39C, agitation, confusion, fainting, very hot skin with respiration and pulse accelerated. If you are concerned about your own health or of someone else do not hesitate to call 112 Emergency Services.
While we all enjoy the sun it is important to respect the Spanish heat. Please stay safe out there!!!
