The environmental organisation, ANSE, have completed the plantation of the riverbank woods in La Huertecica, Calasparra, during which the land was cleared, irrigation syystems implanted and 3,500 native trees and plants planted.
ANSE began the project last December and have counted on the cooperation of numerous volunteers to finish it.
The new wood represents an extension of the forest mass of the Natural Reserve, «Copses and Woods of the Cañaverosa Riverbank.»
La Huertecicia used to be a plantation of plum orchards which fragemented the ecosystem of the Cañaverosa riverbank. The orchards, long abandoned, have been uprooted and substituted for the fledging riverbank forest with species such as white poplars, oaks, hackberry, willow and tamarisk among others.
The project is part of the Fluviatilis programme which forsees a fixation of up to 2,354 tons of CO2 over the next 40 years and a reduction of the hydraulic footprint of 50 million litres of water annually.
The river bank woods offer great value to the ecosystem and landscape, both social and economic. Moreover they host a high diversity of vegetation and animals inclding protected species such as the ash tree and the otter.
Editor´s Note
The reforestationproject is on the right of the footpath which leads to the Cañaverosa Natural Park from the lower Sanctuary Road.
