NEW ASSOCIATION RAISES AWARENESS OF CAT COLONIES

The street colonies of cats in Calasparra are now protected by law and the local authority has a responsibility to catch and neuter them to avoid uncontrolled breeding.
Although many of us feed them, take in a kitten when we can or an injured animal, these sticking plaster solutions do little to protect and care for them. All  too often they fall prey to passing traffic; to disease and injury; and hunger.
Nexonr is delighted to promote a new non-profit association/pressure group formed recently in Calasparra dedicated to raising awareness of the plight of these animals in our town.
The association, Cat Friendly, aims to provide information on the current legal situation in relation to street cats; advise people who voluntarily take care of them in colonies or isolated groups; and collaborate and contribute to the improvement of this situation, always respecting the regulations on animal welfare.
Some of their other objectives are:

– Obtain effective compliance from public administrations with their obligations towards street cats in accordance with the provisions of state and regional animal protection and welfare laws: identification and registration of cats in the name of the city council, microchip implantation, sterilization, vaccination, etc.

– Achieve the implementation in Calasparra of a comprehensive feline colony management plan through ethical methods, such as the CER Program (capture, sterilization and return), with the aim of controlling the feline population and preventing its indiscriminate increase.

– Obtain a municipal center for the stay and care of injured, sick, abandoned or lost cats while they are awaiting veterinary intervention, adoption or recovery, respectively, as well as the frequent unwanted litters.

– Contribute to the training of the residents of Calasparra – through information campaigns, talks at educational centers, etc. – with the aim of improving perception and opinion towards street cats and ensuring that their rights are respected. .

These, and some more, are the objectives that have led several residents of the town to create this association that is open to all residents of Calasparra who want to do their part in achieving the goals that have been exposed.

Editors Note
The Cat Friendly Charity is principally a pressure group, with legal expertise, which aims to encourage the local authority here in Calasparra to live up to its responsibilites under the new Animal Protection Law and to support and advise those who feed street cat colonies here in Calasparra.
They do not have any facilities  to take in and care for stray cats and kittens but will put pressure on Calasparra Town Hall into providing this facility.
If you want to join this group or need more information there is a Cat Friendly Facebook page; email; catfriendly.adpagc2023@gmail.com and telephone: 722 37 02 85.
