A Swedish company, which already has a pilot irrigation project in Calasparra, may try out its revolutionary irrigation system on vegetables at the SALDI/Nexo Ecological project in Villa Vieja.
The company has developed an underground irrigation system for fruit trees and deep rooted plants which economizes the use of water , does not get blocked up, and does not need replacing for years. Once the system is installed underground the farmer can plough and maintain the field without removing the system.
A pilot scheme has been installed at one of the main fruit growers here in Calasparra and is being monitored by the University at Cartagena.
At a preliminary meeting between the company the ecological project last night a small trial was discussed for the SALDI/Nexo project to try out the irrigation system on vegetables.
As usual the ecological vegetable stall will be at Friday’s market in Calasparra this week offering a range of different lettuces and salads, spinach, Swiss Chard, celery, Cardo leaves, spring onions, Swedes, broccoli and leeks.
Shoppers are reminded that the stall opens around 9.30am, as the vegetables are cut on the morning of the market, and usually sells out by midday.
The stall has moved from outside the gates of Cine Rosales to the corner by the Sangui supermarket.
