EXHIBITION OF LUMINOUS MINERALS AT PUERTO CAVE

The new concessionaries of the Puerto Cave have installed an exhibition area where visitors can witness the rare geological phenomenon of luminous minerals.
Only 15% of minerals have this quality and the exhibition is one of the new attractions in this spectacular underground tourist resource.
The management of the cave was granted to the concessionary by Calasparra Town Hall, with a view to maximizing the tourist potential of the site, just a year ago. Yesterday the Mayoress of Calasparra, Teresa Garcia, attended a press conference to present new lighting in the cave as well as the new attractions which include the opening of more “salas”.
The route along the one kilometre labyrinth with its characteristic formations has converted the cave into a major European attraction with origins dating back 15 million years.
It was first opened to the public in 1996 and a new entrance with improved access was installed in 2014.
The new exhibition area for the luminous stones has been installed in the Sala de la Medusa, where visitors can witness the fluorescent minerals change their white or grey colours to red, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple and blue under the ultraviolet lighting.
This exhibition will soon be complemented by a Geological Musuem which will display some of the most valuable  pieces such as the fossilized tooth of a mammoth, a meteorite, a collection of precious stones and a replica of a lynx discovered in the caverns in the 70’s.

The Puerto Cave is constantly being explored and never fails to reveal surprises and interesting data for scientists.
The potholing itinerary of the cave, of two kilometres with a duration of two hours and a half and previously unlit, has been extended to include a new area which is illuminated and features new salas, not previously open to visitors.
Precisely this itinerary will be followed by participants in the Iberia League of Walkers 2023 and is included in the calendar of trials Tour of the Sierra del Puerto and Cueva del Puerto taking place on September 23.
