A Health Service campaign to moderate the use of anti depressants and monitor the cost of prescription drugs for mental health problems will begin this month.
The use of the most popular anti depressants will now be monitored by GPs every time a new prescription falls due.
According to a report from the Department of Health in 2009 some 896.100 bottles of anti depressants were prescribed and representing 56 doses per 1,000 inhabitants in the region at cost of 21.5 million euros. Over the last two years the number of prescriptions has risen by a massive 14%.
