Easter week is approaching fast and both central government and regional governments all over Spain are considering measures to avoid a fourth wave of Covid-19.
Traditionally, Easter is the first big holiday of the year here in Spain and many families and friends, scattered over the different regions, make plans to reunite and celebrate.
It is this “mobility” that is giving governments a headache. How to prevent mass movement and, as happened after the Christmas celebrations, a new wave of the virus with more hospital admissions and more deaths?
The dilemma is whether to cancel Easter Week and close regional perimeters nationwide in order to avoid a fourth wave and a new round of lockdowns and closures or leave it to the individual regional governments to decide on precautionary measures.
Medical experts are calling for a national solution and either the cancellation or the postponement of Easter Week for around three weeks in order to facilitate the incidence per 100,000 head of population falling.
The President of the regional government in Murcia has already intimated that the regional perimeter will remain closed over the three week holiday period. All processions and public events in the region have been cancelled.
The numbers of contagions in the region has increased over the last 24 hours and, sadly, another eight people have died.
