This is the latest advice from the British Embassy following the announcement that travel from the UK to Spain by air will be restricted from today, Tuesday December 22.
Only Spanish nationals and residents may travel on inbound flights from UK to Spain. Documentation (TIE) will be required.
Check your airline for rebooking, refunds etc.
British Embassy webpage states:
“We know that lots of you will have questions about the restrictions on travel reported in the press since yesterday.
The Spanish Government has announced they will be restricting passenger travel on inbound flights from the UK from Tuesday 22 December, with the exception of Spanish nationals and those legally resident in Spain. If you were due to travel to Spain we advise you to contact your travel operator before departure.
If you are a resident in Spain, you should carry your residence document (the green paper EU residence certificate or the new TIE), as well as your valid passport when you travel.

There have been a multitude of questions on social media concerning this issue. To be clear:
If you don´t have residency in Spain you will not be allowed to travel
You are not included in the “resident” group because you are visiting family, parents or friends with residency.
A patron is not proof of residency, neither is a NIE or the white residency paper. You need a TIE or green residency paper.
Even if you habitually live in Spain but have not taken out residency you will not be allowed to travel.
Borders with Portugal and Gibraltar have been reinforced.
Borders between the UK and France (and many other EU countries) are currently closed.
You are advised to check if you are allowed to travel before setting out for airports or on international journeys.
