A new insect, which experts believe is an ally in the biological fight against pests that destroy trees, has been discovered in the region of Murcia and Castilla la Mancha.
The insect, called Opilo lencinai, is a new species which has been discovered by researcher and etymologist Pablo Bahillo, who is also Doctor of Biological Sciences at the University of the Pais Basco (Basque country) and José Ignacio López-Colón, environmentalist, technical agricultural engineer and member of Ecologists in Action.
Named after a Murcian etymologist the insect is the fifth member of the 100 percent Iberian family of “cléridos” (Coleoptera cleridae) to be registered to date. The researchers believe the insect is an ally against the wood beetle which is extremely prejudicial to certain trees and bushes such as pines and ferns.
