Calasparra will have a Mayoress
for the first time in the history of the town as Jose Velez nominates Teresa
García as his successor.
The retiring mayor made an emotional speech at the Full Meeting of the Town
Hall Council on Thursday evening as he referred to his more than 20 years public
service in Calasparra. The past five years as Mayor had fulfilled a lifelong
dream, he said.
“Opportunities come when they come, not necessarily when you would choose them,”
he said referring to his appointment as Government Delegate for Murcia. “In the
end you have to bow to the general interest rather than the personal.
“ I leave Calasparra in the competent hands of the legitimate representatives
elected by this marvelous town of Calasparra but I will continue to be at the disposition
of the residents,” he said.
Teresa Garcia´s appointment must be confirmed
at a meeting of the Full Town Hall Council but she
will act as substitue mayor until that time.
