A new weather front, bringing freezing temperatures
and torrential rain, is heading towards the Murcia region and will probably
arrive early next week.
The Antiplano (Jumilla and Yecla) and the Vega de la Segura (Molino de la
Segura and surrounding area) and coastal areas are expected to be worse
affected.
The front is expected to be substantially less severe than the so called DANA
(see information below), which devastated coastal areas and caused severe
flooding in areas such as Molino de la Segura, last month although the Met
Office comments that these weather fronts are “difficult to predict.”
Calasparra is in the North West area of Murcia and the weather warnings are less
severe for our área. However, expect torrential rain on Monday night, Tuesday
and possibly Wednesday morning and take the usual precautions.
Editors Note: The weather front DANA or Gota Fria as it expressed in Spanish is
a system of low pressure in the upper atmosphere which has separated from the high
zonal flow. Typically, these isolated depressions high in the atmosphere are
found
in the Northern hemisphere, south of the high flow. A DANA sometimes does not
move East in the form of an ordinary storm, but may settle for several days.
The term “Gota Fria” is associated with abundant rainfall, although these days
the Met Office prefers to use the term DANA (Isolated depression at high levels
of the atmosphere), which is a tribute to the meteorologist, Franciscio Garcia
Dana, who died in 1984.
