LOST OR DAMAGED LUGGAGE

Its the holiday season and there is a lot of tooing and froing from the UK to Spain and, obviously, to other destinations.
The Spanish Consumer Organisation, FACUA, reminds all passengers who have suffered the loss, delay in delivery or damage to luggage on any flight that you are entitled to compensation of up to 1,353 euros, depending on the route.
The Association advises that, at the same time you collect checked luggage, you should check that it is in perfect condition and without damage. If not, go immediately to the airline office you used for your trip or the handling company, if the airline company does not have offices at the airport, and ask for the “Parte de Irregularidad de Equipaje” (Baggage Irregularity Part) PIR, by its acronym in English). They will issue you with a document describing the incident. If the luggage does not appear, this report must also be completed.
The PIR is importance because many airlines do not attend to claims for lost or damaged luggage if users do not present it. Therefore, you should not leave the airport without a copy of it.
For national flights, you need to claim for damaged or lost luggage within 10 days, of your flight or the date you were supposed to receive the luggage.
For international flights, you have up to 7 days to claim for any lost or damaged luggage. For delayed luggage, up to 21 days. Once 21 days have passed, the luggage is deemed to be lost rather than delayed.
This information appears on the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain webpage. Readers are advised that there is always useful information on this page, which will also deal with your queries and give advice.
The CAB is a voluntary organisation and the service is free of charge. However, the CAB welcomes donations.
