HELLIN PROPOSES TOURIST TRAIN FOR CALASPARRA

Proposals to tear up the rails and transform the link between Calasparra and Agramón into a Via Verde have been changed in favour of a tourist train.
Hellin Town Hall has approved a motion which scraps plans to dismantle the rail link, which passes alongside the Camarillas reservoir, and proposes a tourist train passing from Hellin to Agramón and Calasparra.
However, the plans are incompatible with a project to increase the capacity of the Camarillas reservoir to 300 cubic hectometers: a plan which is opposed by Hellin Town Hall and other public and private entities because the project would involve flooding a great part of the agricultural land alongside the Mundo river.
The tourist train proposal would save the stations at Calasparra and Agramón and would pass through some of the prettiest parts of the area including the picturesque Camarillas reservoir.
Plans to tear up the rails and turn the “link” into a Via Verde for pedestrians and cyclists would condemn the stations, despite repeated assurances from the regional government that Calasparra Station would be saved.
The Camarillas link was closed when an alternative route was opened cutting travel times for the hybrid service between Murcia and Madrid, bypassing Calasparra and Agramón.
Another recent proposal is for a local service between Cieza and Calasparra making way for a link serving the North West region of Murcia, passing through Calasparra.
