Last year the plague of mosquitos and flies in Calasparra reached new proportions and as spraying implies the indiscriminate genocide of all flying insects, including precious bees and wasps, a radical solution was needed.
The environmental organization, ANSE, also involved in the cleaning and maintenance of our rivers, are introducing bat refuges on farms and properties near the river as a form of pest control. Bats can consume between 8.00 and 10,000 flying insects every night.
Last Saturday Nexonr took part in a workshop in the Youth Centre to construct 30 artificial wooden bat refuges along with a group of volunteers of different ages from children to adults.
The following Sunday another group of volunteers revised the existing bat refuges installed from the summer of 2017 up until now.
After inspecting 86 refuges volunteers were surprised to find that half were already occupied by bats: a total of 109 animals.
These activities were carried out as part of the EU LIFE+Ripisilvanatura Project with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Calasparra Town Hall.
