The Platform Against Fracking, (“Cuenca del Segura Libre de Fracking”) is inviting people to take to their bikes in protest against fracking operations in Calasparra, Hellin, Jumilla, Cieza, Moratalla and Cehegin.
The “cicloturista” protest will start on April 7 from Socovos and make stops in Cehegín and Cieza, finishing up on April 9 in Murcia.
According to the Platform there is a “serious danger” that the company, Oil & Gas Capital SL will start fracking operations under licences, “Leo” and “Scorpio” issued by the region.
A spokesperson told Radio Calasparra the operations would have a “direct impact” on the areas, mentioned above which include Calasparra, and claims it will be a “true disaster for the economy of the zone. Moreover, the Platform insists, fracking could “considerably increase the risk of earthquakes in this part of the región.
In order to raise awareness of the risks the Platform with “AMA” (Environmental and Climate Change Association), the Anti-Fracking Comarques de Castelló and “Ecologists in Acción”, with the collaboration of different cycling organisations in Murcia and the Valencia region and with the participation of Socovos, Cehegin and Cieza Town Halls, are organizing a three day bike protest between the three municipal areas.
The Platform invites people, social organisations, political parties and institutions to take part.
