The Mayors of Calasparra, Moratalla, Caravaca, Cehegin, Jumilla and Hellin have met to protest against the planned fracking project, currently awaiting final approval by the regional government.
The Mayors, all members of the Socialist PSOE, want to introduce a law in the Parliamentary Seat to stop fracking in the whole region.
The regional deputy and former mayor of Calasparra, Jesús Navarro, claims that the region had not consulted the Town Halls affected before they approved explorations of this type.
He reminds the regional government that the Regional Assembly, with the support of the three opposition parties, PSOE, Ciudadanos and Podemos, approved a proposal against fracking in the region.
“We want to warn the regional government that we are not going to permit any prospecting project,” he said.
Navarro, and those who oppose fracking, claim it could contaminate under water supplies.
The company, Oil and Gas, are currently awaiting the result of an environmental impact report and final approval of their licence for prospecting a natural well in Calasparra. The company plans to start work early this year.
