Members of one of the emergency services key to saving the Almadenes Canyon from the fire in September were officially welcomed b y the Mayor when they came to Calasparra to carry out simulated rescue exercises on the River Segura yesterday.
Captain Alejandro Jimenez Cuesta of the Emergency Military Unit, which specializes in disaster rescues, told NEXOnr the rapid waters of the River Segura in Calasparra were perfect for the simulation of victim rescue in flood situations, at sea or during earthquakes.
While the Mayor and the assembled press looked on some 45 members of the 120 strong unit, based in Valencia, simulated rescues of unconscious and conscious victims in the fast running water of the river.
Captain Cuesta paid tribute to the natural resources and installations of Calasparra, which facilitated his unit carrying out these vital exercises. The Mayor of Calasparra in turn paid tribute to the vital role of UME in September “which contributed to the fire in the Sierra del Molino being a “disaster rather than catastrophe.
