Work on the first large scale solar energy plant in the world, located in Calasparra, which will produce energy for 15,000 homes in Murcia is in its final phase.
Yesterday the regional Head of Universities, Businesses and Investigation, José Ballesta, visited the site which should be in full operation by next summer.
He said “The climatic conditions and the sun´s radiation sun in the region offered an inexhaustible supply of energy.”
The business group ‘Tubo Sol Puerto Errado 2’ is responsible for the plant producing energy with the technology ‘Linear Fresnel’ designed by the German multinational Novatec Biosol. Energy is produced from 60 hectares of mirrors in 16 lines which reflect the solar radiation over an absorbent tube of water. The heat of the sun´s rays produces the vapor necessary to activate the turbine which is connected to the generator.
Once the plant is in full operation it will produce 50,000 megawatts of electricity annually.
Ballesta added: “We are talking about an energy that costs less to produce than petrol and permits the reduction of CO2 emissions by 16,000 tons a year.”
