UNDERGROUND CARBON DIOXIDE STORAGE PROJECT

The news that a company has been given permission to investigate the possibility of constructing underground storage for carbon dioxide in an area close to Calasparra has instigated the following statement from Calasparra Town Hall:

«Calasparra Town Hall demands information, transparency and guarantees in light of the planned project to store carbon dioxide in the North West of Murcia (Cehegin, Moratalla).
The local government team, headed by the Mayoress, Teresa Garcia, held a meeting yesterday with the company responsible for the project to create underground storage for carbon dioxide proposed on the land of North West Murcia.
According to the information given by the company the permission to investigate the underground storage of carbon dioxide has been authorised by the Regional Government of Murcia for a year, up to 2026, in accordance with the law 40/2010, of December 29 concerning the geological storage of carbon dioxide.
During the meeting the local government team demanded information and documentation of the project in order to study in detail its scope; the environmental implications; and its impact on the territory and the population.
Calasparra Town Hall has made it clear their position is solid, responsible and in defence of the general interests of the residents of the town and also of the North West.
The Mayoress has indicated that the Town Hall will not permit any decision to be made affecting its territory without the required transparency, participation and evaluation of the risks.
«We are not going to accept that they gamble with the future of our municpal area or with the North West. We demand information and guarantees. Calasparra always defends the interests of its residents above all else. Whatever it costs we are always working to guarantee the well being of our residents and for the preservation of our patrimony», underlined Teresa Garcia.
The Town Hall emphasizes that Calasparra is a town profoundly committed to the defgnce of the environment, the agriculture, sustainibility and the quality of life of the residents, and will not adopt any definite position on this project until the information demanded has been rigourously analysed.
The Mayoress has also discussed the project with the Head of the regional department of Industry,Energy and Mines, urging that the Regional Government of Murcia acts with responsibility and transparency, informing the municpal areas affected and guaranteeing that any initiative of this type complies strictly with the criterias of safety, sustainibility and citizen participation.
“We firmly defend the future of Calasparra and its inhabitants as well as North West Murcia», added the Mayoress.

Following the publication of information concerning the proposed underground storage of carbon monoxide in an area close to Calasparra and Moratallla on social media, Caravaca Town Hall has announced it will actively oppose any project of this type that may afect the Caravaca area.
