THE CARNIVAL IN CALASPARRA RISES ABOVE THE CRISIS

It could have been the cash prizes, the lull in the rain or simply the irresistible call of the annual Carnival which caught the imagination of so many Calasparrians on Saturday and brought them onto the streets in droves.

Some 40 groups of adults in fantastic and principally home made fancy dress costumes vied for first place in the Municipal Fancy Dress Competition.

The Head of the local Tourist and Leisure Department, Maria Dolores Gomaríz, told Calasparra Radio she was “delighted with the town’s response.”

“The crisis has neither dampened the Calasparrians enthusiasm for the Carnival nor curtailed their imagination. Most of the costumes this year were home made, all forty entries were of an extremely high standard and the choosing the winner was extremely difficult, she said.

Although it was disappointing for the town’s little ones not to have the chance to show off their costumes in the traditional Easter Parade they were able to walk the catwalk at the Cine Rosales where there was hot chocolate, fritillas and entertainment laid on by the local authority.

Neither did the older generation miss out on this year’s Carnival as the first ever fancy dress competition for OAPs was held at the OAPs Club plus, of course, the traditional fritillas and chocolate and dancing into the night.

Maria Dolores told Radio Calasparra that on the strength of the town´s response this year, which may have been due to the parades taking place earlier, the local authority were planning to expand the Carnival next year with additional family events “in the true spirit of the Carnival.”
