Work to create an alternative entrance to the Puerta Cave, to replace the steep incline that deterred many visitors, is almost completed, according to the Town Hall.
The new entrance and tourist facilities will mean visitors can also access parts of the cave only previously available to pot-holers.
Work to drill the new access to the cave has finished with “success,” notes the local authority spokesperson, and all that remains is to complete the extended route inside the cave which connects the magnificent Sala de los Garbanzos with the Pozo de los Deseos.
The new Visitor’s Centre will have a reception area, an interpretation centre, offices, cafeteria, shop and a function room. The building, in a similar style to the new Open Theatre near Calasparra Castle, is glass-sided facilitating splendid views across this picturesque part of Calasparra.
