The reduction of speed limits on conventional
(secondary) roads to 90kph comes into force today, Tuesday.
There are 2,974 kilometers of regional road network, of which some 2,717 are
“conventional” or secondary roads and 578 are state roads.
Last year 45 people died in traffic accidents on inter urban roads and 30, 67%,
of those deaths were on conventional roads.
The speed limit reduction, from 100kph to 90kph for motorbikes and cars, aims
to cut road accident rates. The speed limit for lorries will be 80kph but
coaches will be able to travel at 90kph, unless they travel without seat belts,
in which case the limit is 80kph.
