Residents on the urbanizations, Cañada Verde and Tierra del Sol, are concerned for their safety, both in their homes and on the roads.
Over the past six weeks there has been a spate of burglaries in the area which has left many residents of the two urbanizations feeling vulnerable and frightened to leave their homes unattended. They also have concerns about the safe circulation of traffic on the Tierra del Sol. Here the three local political parties respond to these concerns.
Question one: We have neither STOP nor Ceda el Paso signs on Tierra del Sol which makes driving on the urbanization very dangerous for residents and visitors alike. Moreover, several of the roads still do not have signs indicating their name which means the emergency services have great difficulty finding the house which corresponds with an address. The residents would like to know what priority the political parties will give to resolving these problems.
The Partido Popular of Calasparra considers road safety is a theme of vital importance. We don´t understand how the necessary road signs do not exist on the urbanizations Cañada Verde and Tierra del Sol.
We consider that these residents pay their taxes in common with the rest of us and must have the same rights and thus benefit from the security and integrity they deserve.
It is a commitment of the Partido Popular of Calasparra to provide the necessary signs in the town and in the urbanizations which depend on the Town Hall and do not believe it can be any other way.
The PSOE writes: Road safety is fundamental because we are talking about the safety of people, which is the most important and thus concerns us most. For this reason the Town Hall is going to contact the construction company, which has the obligation to provide the signs necessary for safe circulation, immediately in order to preserve the safety of the residents and visitors who circulate on the urbanizations.
The Mayor has given the necessary instructions to the Local Police in order to ensure that the Company responsible for the urbanization complies with its obligation in an effective manner and that the work on the road signs begins within a period of 15 days.
The United Left and Greens Coalition write: Clearly abandoning road safety on this urbanization is unjustifiable. The United Left and Greens is committed to provide all the necessities for road safety and circulation. Moreover, we consider it is important to have mobility programmes in this area, adapted to the requirements of the residents, who are mainly older people who come from a country with different characteristics of road circulation. By forming a citizen’s assembly in the villages and urbanizations we would keep up to date in order to solve the problems created and at the first meeting the residents and the local administration could formalize the naming of the roads.
Question Two: Over the last few weeks there have been a substantial number of burglaries on the outskirts of Calasparra, including on Cañada Verde and Tierra del Sol, and the residents feel very insecure. What strategy do the political parties have for crime prevention, protection and support for the victims of crime in these areas?
The Partido Popular writes: Security must be a priority and that is the way we understand it in the Partido Popular. In these hard and difficult times be vigilant about the integrity and security of our residents.
We think in order to guarantee the security of our citizens on the urbanizations, Tierra del Sol and Cañada Verde, it would be necessary to increase the police presence in the area in order to protect the physical integrity as well as the private property of our neighbours.
The PSOE writes: Security is one of our principal concerns. The Town Hall is currently taking all the measures within its control to increase vigilance and the protection of our neighbours on Cañada Verde and Tierra del Sol, in common with the rest of the municipal area. In this way the Head of Security has given instructions to the Chief of the Local Police to increase significantly the preventative controls.
The Mayor has called an urgent meeting of the local Junta de Seguridad (Security Committee) and will propose adopting the necessary measures to increase, even more, the coordination between the local police and the Guardia Civil, in order to double the said controls and increase vigilance, all with the object of arresting the band of thieves which is operating in our area and other areas in the region.
In the same way we ask our residents to collaborate and not to hesitate to report anything they see which appears suspicious immediately to the local police and the Guardia Civil either by calling the emergency number 112 or the Local Police (696 44 22 00 y 696 88 77 77).
The United Left Coalition and Greens defend the rights of all citizens wherever they live, whether it is in the town, in the old villages or in the new urbanizations. When we opposed the creation of these urbanizations in our municipal area we did so because we knew that it would be difficult and expensive to provide the best services to residents living a long way out of the town. Those responsible are those who have made promises they have not kept.
We believe that due to the increase in population of this urbanization there must be an even higher police presence than at present and that there should be programmes of crime prevention which anticipate the actions of thieves and those who attack dwellings.
