The Director General of Traffic´s campaign against speeding drivers, in a bid to cut accidents, has caught a total of 1,178 in 16.783 controls in the region between April 17 and 23.
The statistics reflect that seven percvent of the vehicles controlled were driving in excess of the limit. The drivers face fines.
The majority of the offences wre comitted on conventional roads where police officers controlled 12,226 vehicles and denounced 1,026, some 8.3%.
On motorways 3,986 vehicles were controlled , of these 1,026 were denounced for speeding, represening 8.38%.
The DGT reminds drivers that speeding is the principal cause of road traffic accidents and that reducing speed of is the most effective way of reducing accidents and serious injuries.
