The Ecologists in Action claim the Motocross Track in the Sierra del Molino is a fire hazard and breaches three different environmental laws.
The organization have “denounced” the installation of the track, some 12 years ago, which they describe as a “powder keg” in an area where a forest fire destroyed 600 hectares vegetation and woodland in September 2010.
However, José Velez, Deputy Mayor, says he finds it “strange” that the organization should denounce the track after it has been in existence since 1999.
He confirmed that the track had been closed for two years because the Town Hall had received written instructions from the region with a series of conditions the track must meet before it reopens. As these conditions required a “significant investment in these times of crisis” the track remained closed.
The ecologists claim the installation of the track in the area in contravention of the environmental protection order, ZEPA; the law of Natural Patrimony and Bioversidad: the law of Public Spaces; and the Protection of the Environment. The organisation also claims “the activity carries a high risk of fire” as it is close to a pine forest and dense vegetation.
Velez claims the track was installed before the environmental protection order ZEPA was in vigor.
