MEDIEVAL TOWN CRIER HERALDS THE BEGINNING OF THE FIESTA

The Spanish equivalent of our medieval town crier announced the beginning of festivities by reciting the history of the Donation of the town of Calasparra to the Military Order of San Juan of Jerusalem in three different parts of the town last night.
In full medieval costume and accompanied by two musicians the “pregon” (opening speech) was announced in the Plaza de la Corredera, the Rice Growers Fountain and then in the Gran Via to the great entertainment of the crowd.
By 9pm the central square and the Convento in Calasparra was buzzing as the acting Mayor, Jesus Navarro, officially inaugurated the commencement of the celebrations which will continue for three days and includes the regional fiesta today to mark the “Day of the Region of Murcia.
Last night nearly 100 people attended the Medieval Banquet in full costume and today the Ruta de Tapas begins with 27 bars and restaurants participating and a part of the profits destined for the victims of the Lorca earthquake. The medieval market will continue throughout the day and tonight at 8pm the grand procession will start in the Gran Via and end at St Peter’s Church.
