We asked the political parties to respond to the two first questions from reader within 48 hours of receiving them and we are delighted to report that all three parties responded well before the deadline. Here are their answers.
STRAY AND ABANDONED ANIMALS
The Partido Popular understands that this is a problem that merits our attention and our commitment. We do not have to just attend to the necessities of our residents, in regards to this question, but also to those of the animals which are abandoned.
We understand that the Dog Catcher Service must be continuous and attention to these animals more constant.
Developing a programme of neutering, collection, maintenance and re-homing of these animals is one of our priorities and we will initiate these projects with the collaboration of associations for the protection of animals and vets.

The IU, Left Parties Coalition, believes the main problem is that of the defecation of animals in the street. This is impossible to correct without a major campaign of education and awareness raising and to educate residents to carry special papers and bags in order to remove excrement near parks and gardens.
As regards stray animals we believe they should wear clear identification in order that owners fulfill their responsibilities and, at the same time, give residents an incentive to collaborate with the collection of these animals in the most effective manner.
The PSOE, Partido Socialista recognizes that it is true there are too many abandoned animals in our town. The Dog Catcher Service (CERECO), with which the Town Hall has an agreement, normally functions one or two days a week, although in urgent situations the local Police will call them. To resolve the problem it is fundamental to concentrate on education in respect of animals, and in this sense, all the teaching staff at the local education centres are doing a grand job with the little ones. For its part the Town Hall will continue to organize campaigns which raise awareness about the care of animals. Instead of abandoning an animal for which they can no longer care residents should take it to one of the Centre for the Adoption and Collection of Animals, such as CERECO. The local Police will call CERECO on request and the animal will be collected free of charge.
As far as a veterinary service for neutering animals, we are ready to reach an agreement with the College of Veterinaries in order to organize this service and other services which are for the well being of the animal, and, as part of the scheme for those people who request it, to institute a system of subsiding vet’s fees, depending on a residents financial circumstances.
LITTER ON THE BANKS OF THE RIVER ARGOS
The PSOE, Socialist Party says: Even though the obligation to keep the rivers and waterways clean is a matter for the Water Confederation of the Segura the Town Hall will continue to organize campaigns to keep the river banks clean and awareness raising campaigns to educate residents to respect public spaces. Ample waste paper bins will also be set in all public spaces so visitors can dispose of their rubbish correctly. There has been some good work through the project to clean a part of the banks of the Rio Argos but we must continue to demand that the Confederation, which collaborates with the Town Hall, continues to carry out work to ensure the banks of the river are totally clean. We must also recognize the grand work that the Associations and Clubs of our town have undertaken to clean up the rivers and countryside etc.
For the Partido Popular of Calasparra the care and maintenance of the environment is a priority. We are under an obligation to restore the green spaces, conserve our rivers and avoid the maltreatment of our magnificent natural surroundings. We must leave a better world for future generations. This is the commitment we make.
We will initiate joint litter collection operations with the local schools which will not only keep our surroundings clean but will also serve to raise awareness amongst young people to respect the environment.
It is our priority to initiate joint coordinated operations between the Town Hall and the regional government and to formulate a plan to keep our surroundings clean.

THE IU, Left Parties Coalition says: In the first place it is important to establish where the rubbish tips are and report any illegal tipping to the Environmental Protection at the Comunidad Autónoma (regional government). The assistance of residents in identifying fly tippers will prevent future abuses.
Finally we would organize litter collections with volunteers, local associations and schools to clean up different areas of the zone. In this way,as well cleaning up the town we will educate the little ones.
