Sad but unfortunately true! The Local Police have issued a warning about scammers who use a «hug» to rob victims.
Look out for the «Abrazo Cariñoso» «Affectionate embrace,» runs the warning.
Look out for the «Abrazo Cariñoso» «Affectionate embrace,» runs the warning.
The fraudster is likely to be a young person, very friendly and chatty, who approaches elderly people in the street under the pretence of confusing their identity; a false thank you for directing them or any other invented excuse; a plea for help for a hospital, chemist or anything else in an attempt to fool you.
In this moment of supposed «happiness» or gratitude the fraudster will try to hug the victim, kiss them or shake hands, taking advanatge of the moment to steal a watch, a gold chain or a wallet or purse before the victim realises.
«They are authentic magicians of confusion» warn the police who advise maintaining a distance from people you don´t know or anyone who attempts to come too close or tries to touch you or embrace you.
Do not trust people you don´t know even if the person appears to be the friendliest person in the world. No embraces for people you don´t know, say Local Police.
Keep on eye on your possessions and if you note closeness or touching put your hand on your jewellery or purse and keep your distance.
Editors Note:
Unfortunately, the Spanish habit of embracing and kissing acquantances in the street is a perfect pretence for these petty thieves. Readers are advised to be aware of this scam.
